Greeting- 2 minutes
Teacher to Students- Listen & Repeat (some or all)
Hello, Hi, Hey, Howdy, G’day, Good Morning, Hola, Aloha, Bon Jour, Bon Dia, Bon Journo, Ni Hao, Konnichiwa, Anyohaseyo, Sambaino, Kiola, Selamat Pagi (am) (pm-Siang), Shalom, Jambo, Asalamalekum, Zzdrastvet-yah, Namaste.

Janken 4’s- Warm-Up/Review/Conversation Skills Practice- 5 minutes
ALT/HRT: Janken and do the conversation first together, then with a few students to practice/demonstrate.
Students: Each student Janken and Converse with 3 others in groups of 4
Blackboard

  • W)I can swim. 
  • L1)I can swim, too. 
  • L2)I can’t swim.

かみしばい-Storyboards- Can You Swim?- 8 minutes
Materials- Can You Swim? Storyboards
ALT- Read the storyboards to the students.
Students- Listen and interact with the ALT.

Chant- I Can Swim- Can You Swim?- 6 minutes

Textbook- page 27. Use the nine pictures for vocabulary.
ALT- First, ask the students if they know the vocabulary for the pictures on page 27.  Then, introduce the chant and lead singing. Roll one dice to choose Yes (1,3,5) or No (2,4,6).
Students- Tell the vocabulary you know. Sing together.
HRT- Suggest ideas for vocabulary on page 27 to students in Japanese.

Activity 2- Interview- 10 minutes
Textbook- page 27
Blackboard-
  • W) Can you play the piano?
  • L) (No, I can’t.) Yes, I can. My name is Ken.
ALT/HRT- Demonstrate the activity- Play Janken, Winner asks, “Can you OO?” until the other student says “Yes, I can. My name is XX.” Winner then writes the other student’s name into his/her book under the picture.
Students- Watch & listen to the demonstation, then tell the meaning in Japanese. All standing with textbooks, make pairs, play Janken, & do the conversation.  When all pictures have a name, write your name on the blackboard and sit down.

Activity- Find 3 People- 10 minutes
Blackboard-
  • W) I can play tennis. Can you play tennis? 
  • L1) Yes, I can. I can play tennis.
  • L2) No, I can’t. I can’t play tennis.
ALT/HRT- Demonstrate activity- Pairs Janken, Winner asks “Can you OO?” and Loser answers.  GOAL is to find 3 people with YES (or NO) answers. Students then return to their seats and sit down.

Wrap-Up- 3 minutes
(Present common mistakes to the whole class. Write the mistaken point on the blackboard, and ask if anybody can see the mistake.) Or-
HRT to Students, in Japanese:
-What did we talk about today? 
-Were there some words you already knew?
-Did you learn any new words?
-What was fun or interesting?
-What was difficult?
-How can we make that easier next time?

Closing- 1 minute
Students: ‘Thank you! Good bye!’
Teachers: ‘You’re welcome! Good bye!’
